Step #1: Water, water and more water! Drink at least 8 glasses per day. Cold water makes your body burn calories even faster. Fact is, sometimes you’re not really hungry, just thirsty.
Step #2: Coffee or tea, please. No cream or sugar, thanks. No weight gain without the dairy and sweets, but caffeine dehydrates the body, so back to Step #1: Water, water and more water!
Step #3: Smaller plate, smaller portions. Use a salad plate, 2/3 filled with vegetables, 1/3 with protein. If you use a plate big enough for a whole cow, you’ll eat the whole cow.
Step #4: Eat meals at set times each day. Eat at a table, not on the run. Revel in that grand food you’re eating. Force the children to sit at the table with you. (You may have to use duct tape.)
Step #5: Skip sugar-rich sodas. One can of cola contains 10 whopping teaspoons of sugar, plus sinister chemicals, preservatives and caffeine. Just try eating all that sugar without the liquid.
Step #6: Fresh fruit! Not juice! Too much sugar, calories and chemicals, but less fiber and vitamins. Need juice? Squeeze an orange into your mouth. Really strong? Squeeze an apple.
Step #7: Just say no, okay, just say less to alcohol. Try one glass of red wine, less calories. It may even help your heart. Beer makes beer guts. Cocktails make brain mush.
Step #8: Grill, broil or steam? YES! Fry it? Forget it! Teach your taste buds to kick the grease habit and experience the world of fresh herbs. Add fat to your pan and you add fat to your paunch.
Step #9: More meals means less fat! Instead of stuffing at 3 meals, eating 5 or 6 times a day with smaller portions helps keep your metabolism rate up and keep your weight down. You can actually eat more often!
Step #10: Feast on fiber...the good kind. This does NOT mean stuffing your face with breads, pastas and donuts. Buy fruits, vegetables and whole wheat. Steal nuts from your neighbor’s trees. Constipation begone!
Step #11: Choose quality over quantity. You are what you eat. Fresh, healthy foods make you feel fresh and healthy. High-energy foods give you energy. Crash diets make you crash.
Step #12: Change your mind, change your body. Look into the mirror, tell yourself you’re beautiful and on a splendid journey to your goal. Ditch the black. Wear bright clothing, be happy all day, everyday, and let yourself dream.
